Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

241
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Behavior Therapy01:22

Behavior Therapy

292
Behavior therapy incorporates diverse techniques rooted in classical conditioning principles to address maladaptive behaviors and anxiety disorders. These methods aim to reduce avoidance behaviors, foster adaptive coping mechanisms, and alter associations between stimuli and responses, making them effective in a wide range of therapeutic contexts.
Exposure therapy is a cornerstone of behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders. It involves systematic exposure to feared stimuli, either in real...

Elaborative Rehearsals01:07

Elaborative Rehearsals

189
Elaborative rehearsal is a crucial cognitive strategy that strengthens information encoding in long-term memory by making meaningful connections between new data and pre-existing knowledge. This approach contrasts with maintenance rehearsal, which involves simple repetition without delving into the significance of the information. While maintenance rehearsal might temporarily keep information active in short-term memory, it is less effective for long-term retention.
The effectiveness of...

Chunking and Rehearsal in Sensory Memory01:22

Chunking and Rehearsal in Sensory Memory

396
Improving short-term memory can be achieved through techniques like chunking and rehearsal. Chunking involves organizing information into larger, more manageable units. This technique is particularly useful for information that exceeds the typical memory span of between five and nine items. For instance, logging into an online account with a password like "ta89vq0179gz" involves grouping letters and numbers into three chunks—ta89, vq01, and 79gz. It makes large amounts of...

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders01:24

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders

432
Treatment approaches for psychological disorders fall into three main categories: psychological, biological, and sociocultural. Each approach targets different aspects of mental health, requiring varying levels of education and training.
Psychological therapies focus on modifying emotions, thoughts, and behaviors through talking, interpreting, listening, rewarding, challenging, and modeling. Clinical psychologists, counselors, and social workers commonly practice psychotherapy. Clinical...

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

201
Cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBTs) are grounded in the belief that our thoughts profoundly influence our emotions and actions. Advocates of CBT emphasize three core assumptions: first, that cognitions are identifiable and measurable; second, that they are central to psychological functioning; and third, that irrational or maladaptive beliefs can be replaced with rational and adaptive ones. This transformative approach to therapy has paved the way for specific models such as Albert...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Exposure therapy is a leading treatment for anxiety disorders, yet response rates remain suboptimal, around 50%.
  • Enhancing memory consolidation after exposure may improve treatment efficacy.
  • Between-session mental rehearsal is explored as a strategy to strengthen exposure learning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of between-session mental rehearsal in consolidating exposure memories.
  • To determine if mental rehearsal enhances the effectiveness of exposure therapy for spider phobia.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty-two individuals with spider phobia underwent two exposure therapy sessions.
  • Participants were randomized to either mental rehearsal or a non-specific control rehearsal condition.
  • Improvements were measured using questionnaires, subjective distress, skin conductance, and a behavioral approach test with a tarantula.

Main Results:

  • Both groups showed improvement, but the mental rehearsal group demonstrated significantly greater reductions in spider fear and subjective distress.
  • The mental rehearsal group also showed significantly greater improvement in behavioral approach test performance.
  • Mental rehearsal was found to be an effective supplement to standard exposure therapy.

Conclusions:

  • Between-session mental rehearsal is a viable strategy for consolidating exposure memories.
  • This technique shows promise for increasing treatment response rates in anxiety disorders.
  • Mental rehearsal may be applicable to other psychiatric disorders treated with exposure therapy.
