Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the association between daily activity levels and cognitive function in elderly individuals.
  • To determine if moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) impacts cognitive performance.
  • To explore the relationship between physical activity, cognitive status, and depression in older adults.

Main Methods:

  • 53 community-dwelling elderly participants (aged 60+) were assessed.
  • Demographics, cognitive function, and depression scores were collected.
  • Activity levels and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) time were measured using accelerometers over 7 days.

Main Results:

  • 27 participants showed cognitive impairment.
  • Cognitively impaired individuals had significantly less MVPA time and higher depression scores (P < 0.05).
  • MVPA time was positively associated with cognitive function (r=0.358, P=0.009), even after controlling for age and BMI. Memory scores correlated with MVPA time and mean activity level.

Conclusions:

  • Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity is positively related to cognitive function in the elderly.
  • Higher daily activity levels may support better cognitive health in older adults.
  • Interventions promoting daily physical activity could benefit cognitive maintenance in the aging population.
