Summary

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of EPP exposure on lung function, exercise capacity, and quality of life in EPP workers.
  • To determine the factors that influence exercise capacity among EPP workers.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 54 EPP workers and 54 healthy controls.
  • Assessment of lung function (FEV1, FEV1/FVC), bronchial hyperactivity (EPT), respiratory muscle strength (MIP, MEP), and exercise capacity (ISWT).
  • Evaluation of quality of life using SGRQ and NHP, and physical activity using IPAQ.

Main Results:

  • EPP workers showed significantly lower FEV1, MIP, handgrip strength, and ISWT distance compared to controls.
  • EPP workers exhibited a higher change in FEV1 after EPT and higher %HRmax.
  • ISWT distance in EPP workers was significantly correlated with age, height, work duration, lung function parameters, muscle strength, physical activity, and quality of life scores.

Conclusions:

  • While lung function changes (FEV1, FEV1/FVC) were not clinically significant based on LLN criteria, exercise capacity is demonstrably impaired in EPP workers.
  • Exercise-induced bronchospasm, inspiratory muscle strength (MIP), and duration of work are significant determinants of reduced exercise capacity in this population.
  • These findings highlight the need for occupational health strategies to mitigate the impact of EPP exposure on worker's physical performance and well-being.
