Atherosclerosis IV: Nursing Management01:23

Atherosclerosis IV: Nursing Management

144
Nursing management for a patient with arteriosclerosis involves a comprehensive approach focusing on lifestyle modification, disease monitoring, education, and symptomatic care. Here is an overview of effective nursing strategies:Assessment and Monitoring: Initial and ongoing assessments are crucial. Nurses must document the patient's medical history, including any hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and other cardiovascular diseases. Assessments also cover family history and lifestyle...

Coronary Artery Disease IV: Preventive Measures

475
Effective preventive measures for coronary artery disease (CAD) focus on controlling modifiable risk factors, including cholesterol abnormalities and lifestyle changes.Cholesterol ManagementFirst, the Mediterranean diet and the American Heart Association advocate for maintaining low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels below 100 mg/dL, with a more stringent recommendation of below 70 mg/dL for individuals at high risk. LDL cholesterol, often termed "bad cholesterol," can lead to the...

Regulation of Stroke Volume01:27

Regulation of Stroke Volume

4.4K
The regulation of stroke volume, which is the amount of blood the heart pumps out during each heartbeat, is critical for maintaining a healthy circulatory system. Stroke volume is influenced by three main factors: preload, contractility, and afterload.
Preload refers to the degree of stretch on the heart before it contracts. It's analogous to the stretching of a rubber band; the more it's stretched, the more forcefully it snaps back. This concept is encapsulated in the Frank-Starling law of the...

Peripheral Artery Disease III: Interprofessional Care

111
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is characterized by narrowed arteries that diminish blood flow to the extremities. Effective management of PAD requires an interprofessional approach involving various healthcare professionals. The critical aspects of interprofessional care for PAD patients focus on risk factor modification, drug therapy, exercise therapy, nutrition therapy, critical limb ischemia care, and interventional radiology and surgical procedures. The primary treatment goal for PAD...

Coronary Artery Disease V: Interprofessional Care

124
Interprofessional care for coronary artery disease includes pharmacological therapy and revascularization procedures.Pharmacological therapy for Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) aims to manage symptoms, prevent complications, and improve patient outcomes through various classes of medications:Antiplatelet Agents:Aspirin and Clopidogrel: These medications inhibit platelet aggregation, preventing blood clots, which is crucial for avoiding heart attacks and strokes. Doctors often prescribe these...

Acute Coronary Syndrome IV: Interprofessional Care

95
IntroductionThe management of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) aims to minimize myocardial damage, preserve myocardial function, and prevent complications.Initial ManagementInpatient management involves continuous cardiac monitoring, preferably in an ICU, focusing on blood pressure, serum sodium, potassium, and creatinine levels, and urine output. Ongoing pharmacologic management is crucial for stabilizing the patient.Supplemental Oxygen: Administer supplemental oxygen if oxygen saturation is...

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Public Health
  • Health Communication

Background:

  • Poor medication adherence and uncontrolled risk factors increase recurrent stroke and acute coronary syndrome risk in stroke survivors.
  • Multimodal patient education can enhance adherence and promote non-pharmacological measures for vascular risk reduction.
  • A multilingual patient education package (SMS, print, audio-visual) was developed for secondary stroke prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a complex, multilingual patient education package for secondary stroke prevention.
  • To assess the feasibility and acceptability of the developed educational materials.
  • To prepare for a randomized control trial evaluating the package's efficacy in preventing major cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events.

Main Methods:

  • A formative stage involved developing intervention materials (SMS, video, workbook).
  • An acceptability stage included assessment and modification by stakeholders and language experts.
  • An implementation stage tested the package for usability and identified any issues.

Main Results:

  • Developed 69 SMS, 6 videos, and a 11-chapter workbook with 15 activities, all in English.
  • 355 stakeholders (patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals) participated in acceptability testing.
  • High understandability scores (over 95%) were achieved for all material formats across languages; no implementation issues were reported.

Conclusions:

  • A stepwise approach successfully developed an implementable, complex, multilingual patient education material.
  • The developed package is undergoing efficacy testing in the SPRINT INDIA study to prevent major adverse cardiovascular events.
