Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

294
Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.
Sigmoidoscopy

Inflammatory Bowel Disease V: Surgical Management

298
Surgical interventions for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, are essential in managing symptoms and addressing complications. The selection of surgical procedures is contingent upon the specific conditions and complications that stem from these illnesses.
Here are some common surgical interventions for IBD:

    Area of Science:

    • Colorectal Surgery
    • Minimally Invasive Procedures

    Background:

    • Stapled hemorrhoidopexy (Longo operation) is infrequently utilized in some regions.
    • Higher costs and specialized training may contribute to its limited adoption.
    • This study reports long-term outcomes of the standard stapled hemorrhoidopexy technique.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of stapled hemorrhoidopexy.
    • To assess patient satisfaction and complication rates associated with the procedure.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 35 patients with second- and third-degree hemorrhoids undergoing stapled hemorrhoidopexy (PPH03 stapler).
    • Data collected from January 2012 to December 2020.
    • Follow-up included rectal examination to assess recurrence or prolapse over a mean of 6 years.

    Main Results:

    • Mean operative time was 42 minutes; mean postoperative hospital stay was 1.55 days.
    • High patient satisfaction rate of 94% reported.
    • Low complication rate: one reoperation for bleeding, two cases of thrombosis, one minor prolapse; no stenosis, persistent pain, or incontinence.

    Conclusions:

    • Stapled hemorrhoidopexy is a safe and feasible surgical option for symptomatic hemorrhoids.
    • The procedure requires minimal analgesia and allows for early patient discharge.
    • Careful patient selection and surgical technique are crucial for achieving favorable long-term outcomes and high patient satisfaction.
