Nurses in Jordan experience poor sleep quality, linked to stress, depression, and musculoskeletal pain. Healthcare administrations must address these factors impacting nurse well-being and performance.
Area of Science:
- Nursing Research
- Occupational Health
- Mental Health
Background:
- Sleep disorders are prevalent among nurses, potentially impairing job performance and overall well-being.
- Hospital-based nurses in Jordan face unique occupational challenges that may affect their sleep patterns.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the prevalence of sleep quality deficits among hospital-based nurses in Jordan.
- To identify key factors associated with poor sleep quality in this nursing population.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study involving 597 hospital-based nurses in Jordan.
- Data collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS).
- Descriptive statistics and multiple variable linear regression were employed to analyze predictors of sleep quality.
Main Results:
- 68% of nurses reported deficits in sleep quality, with a mean PSQI score of 7.8 (± 3.7).
- Stress, depression, and the number of joints with musculoskeletal pain were significant positive predictors of poor sleep quality.
- Manual handling training and years of experience were significant negative predictors of poor sleep quality.
Conclusions:
- Hospital-based nurses in Jordan exhibit poor sleep quality, accompanied by high levels of mental health symptoms and musculoskeletal pain.
- Healthcare service administrations should prioritize addressing the identified predictors of sleep quality to improve nurse well-being.
- Interventions targeting stress, depression, and musculoskeletal pain may enhance sleep quality among nursing staff.
