Background:

  • Continuous tooth eruption is a physiological process.
  • Its occurrence and impact on periodontal health in adults remain areas of investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if continuous eruption occurs in maxillary teeth.
  • To assess the magnitude of this eruption.
  • To evaluate its effects on periodontal parameters.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized 3D digital models from 140 participants' jaw casts (Study of Health in Pomerania, SHIP).
  • Measured continuous eruption using reference points and virtual occlusal planes over 16 years.
  • Assessed periodontal variables: probing depth, clinical attachment levels, gingival height, and missing teeth.

Main Results:

  • Continuous eruption (>1 mm over 16 years) was observed in 4% of participants, averaging 0.33 mm (0.021 mm/year).
  • Increased continuous eruption correlated with decreased mean gingival height (B = -0.34).
  • In participants without tooth loss, continuous eruption showed a negative association with probing depth.

Conclusions:

  • Continuous tooth eruption is clearly detectable in the adult maxilla.
  • This process may contribute to reduced gingival heights and influence probing depth.
