  • The COVID-19 pandemic has led to widespread organ impairment.
  • The effect of COVID-19 on human thyroid function has not been previously established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of thyroid function abnormalities in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 84 COVID-19 patients, 91 pneumonia patients, and 807 healthy controls.
  • Measurement of thyroid hormones including total triiodothyronine (TT3) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).

Main Results:

  • COVID-19 patients exhibited lower TT3 and TSH levels compared to healthy controls.
  • Thyroid function abnormalities were present in 61.9% of COVID-19 patients, more frequent in severe cases.
  • Thyroid dysfunction correlated with prolonged viral clearance, decreased lymphocytes, and elevated C-reactive protein (CRP).

Conclusions:

  • Thyroid function abnormalities are common in COVID-19, especially in severe cases.
  • Nonthyroidal illness syndrome may contribute to these thyroid changes.
