E. coli Is a Poor End-Product Criterion for Assessing the General Microbial Risk Posed From Consuming Norovirus

Short sewage discharges quickly contaminate shellfish with fecal indicator organisms like Escherichia coli and norovirus. While depuration removes E. coli, it fails to eliminate norovirus, indicating current shellfish safety standards are insufficient.
