Summary

First-trimester maternal serum N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (ProBNP) levels were significantly higher in women who developed intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Elevated ProBNP may serve as a potential predictive marker for IUGR in pregnant individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the utility of first-trimester maternal serum N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (ProBNP) levels for predicting intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 500 pregnant women undergoing routine aneuploidy screening.
  • Maternal serum samples were collected between 11-14 weeks of gestation.
  • Plasma ProBNP levels were compared between 32 women with diagnosed postpartum IUGR and 32 healthy controls.

Main Results:

  • Mean ProBNP levels were significantly higher in the IUGR group (113.73±94.69 pg/mL) compared to the control group (58.33±47.70 pg/mL) (p<0.01).
  • At a cutoff of 50.93 pg/mL, ProBNP demonstrated an AUC of 0.794 (p=0.001) for predicting IUGR.
  • Sensitivity and specificity for IUGR prediction were 78.1% and 69.0%, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • First-trimester maternal serum ProBNP levels are significantly elevated in women who subsequently develop IUGR.
  • Maternal serum ProBNP in the first trimester shows potential as a predictive marker for IUGR.
  • This finding may lead to improved early detection and management strategies for IUGR.
