We developed novel 3D hierarchical metal/polymer-carbon paper electrodes for efficient carbon dioxide (CO2) electroreduction. These catalysts demonstrate high activity and selectivity for producing valuable products like ethylene.
Area of Science:
- Electrochemistry
- Materials Science
- Catalysis
Background:
- Designing efficient catalysts is crucial for carbon dioxide (CO2) electroreduction.
- Existing catalysts often lack the required activity, selectivity, and stability for industrial applications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize novel 3D hierarchical metal/polymer-carbon paper (M/polymer-CP) electrodes.
- To investigate their performance in CO2 electroreduction.
Main Methods:
- In situ electrosynthesis of a 3D polymer layer on carbon paper (CP).
- Decoration of a 3D metal layer onto the polymer-CP to form M/polymer-CP electrodes.
- Electrochemical testing in an H-type cell.
Main Results:
- The M/polymer-CP electrodes efficiently reduced CO2 to various products (C2H4, CO, HCOOH) based on the metal used.
- A copper/polyaniline-CP (Cu/PANI-CP) electrode achieved 59.4% Faradaic efficiency for C2H4 production at 30.2 mA cm-2.
- The 3D hierarchical structure and in situ formation were identified as critical factors for high performance.
Conclusions:
- The developed M/polymer-CP electrodes offer a promising platform for efficient CO2 electroreduction.
- The in situ synthesis method enables control over electrode architecture and composition.
- Further research can explore different metal/polymer combinations for tailored CO2 conversion.
