Insights
Patients with recent acute coronary syndrome (ACS) show low awareness of key cardiovascular risk factors like physical activity, smoking, and diabetes. Improved education and technology are crucial for better risk factor management in this high-risk group.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Preventive Medicine
- Public Health
Background:
- Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the primary global cause of mortality and morbidity.
- Effective preventive strategies for CVD exist but are underutilized or poorly understood by patients.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate patient awareness of major modifiable cardiovascular risk factors.
- Focus on individuals recently diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) undergoing cardiac rehabilitation.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 50 patients with recent ACS was enrolled.
- A 9-item questionnaire assessed knowledge of cardiovascular risk factors and dietary habits.
Main Results:
- Significant underestimation of the impact of physical activity, smoking, and diabetes on cardiovascular health.
- Limited adherence to healthy eating habits, despite awareness of their protective role.
Conclusions:
- Patients with recent ACS exhibit insufficient awareness of common cardiovascular risk factors.
- Need for personalized educational interventions and technological tools to enhance risk factor awareness and adherence, particularly in high-risk populations.
Introduction:
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are still the leading cause of death and disability worldwide despite the availability of well-established and effective preventive strategies.
Aim:
We aim to assess patients awareness of the main modifiable cardiovascular risk factors in a population with recent acute coronary syndrome (ACS) admitted in cardiac rehabilitation unit.
Methods:
50 patients with recent ACS have been recruited. We used a 9-items questionnaire about awareness of CV risk factors and eating habits.
Results:
Many patients underestimate the role of physical activity (PA), cigarette smoking and diabetes as main CV risk factors. Although the importance of good eating habits as cardiovascular protector is well known, only few participants declare a healthy balanced diet.
Conclusions:
This study revealed low awareness of common CV risk factors among patients with recent ACS. Individual training plans and the use of technological development to improve awareness and adherence are needed especially in high risk population.

Exercise and Cardiovascular Response
Light to moderate physical activity initiates a series of interconnected responses in the body. The heart rate modestly increases in anticipation of the workout, followed by widespread vasodilation as oxygen consumption by skeletal muscles increases. This results in decreased peripheral resistance, increased capillary blood flow, and accelerated...
