Area of Science:

  • Neuropsychiatry
  • Pharmacology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Acyclovir is a widely used antiviral medication.
  • Psychiatric side effects of acyclovir are considered very rare in clinical practice.
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a hematologic malignancy.

Observation:

  • A patient with CLL developed depression and paranoid delusions.
  • These psychiatric symptoms emerged during intravenous acyclovir therapy for herpes simplex infection.
  • The patient's condition improved after discontinuing acyclovir.

Findings:

  • The case suggests a potential link between intravenous acyclovir and psychiatric disturbances.
  • Resolution of symptoms occurred with medication adjustment (haloperidol and maprotiline).

Related Experiment Videos

  • This highlights the importance of considering drug-induced side effects in psychiatric presentations.
  • Implications:

    • Clinicians should be aware of rare neuropsychiatric adverse events associated with acyclovir.
    • Further investigation into acyclovir's potential central nervous system effects may be warranted.
    • This case contributes to the limited literature on acyclovir-induced psychiatric disorders.
