Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

277
Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Complications

Background:

  • Postoperative vision loss (POVL) is a rare but severe complication.
  • Recent reports link POVL to laparoscopic procedures.

Observation:

  • A 34-year-old female experienced complete vision loss post-laparoscopic hysterectomy.
  • Initial imaging and funduscopic exams showed no abnormalities.

Findings:

  • The patient received IV methylprednisolone on postoperative day 7.
  • Vision gradually improved, with full recovery by 2 weeks.

Implications:

  • POVL following laparoscopic surgery requires urgent evaluation.
  • Early intervention with corticosteroids may be beneficial for visual recovery.
