Medication adherence in older Iranian adults is influenced by individual and external factors. Understanding these determinants is crucial for improving medication management and overall community health.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Pharmacology
- Sociology
Background:
- High rates of irrational medicine use and low medication adherence are prevalent among older Iranian patients.
- Medication adherence is a critical factor in managing chronic conditions and ensuring treatment efficacy in the elderly population.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore the key determinants influencing medication adherence among elderly individuals in Iran.
- To identify factors contributing to both adherence and non-adherence in this demographic.
Main Methods:
- A qualitative study employing 20 semi-structured interviews with elderly patients and healthcare personnel.
- Purposeful sampling was utilized to select participants.
- Thematic analysis, supported by MAXQDA software, was applied to analyze interview transcripts and develop a thematic map.
Main Results:
- Two primary themes emerged: individual determinants and external determinants of medication adherence.
- Six sub-themes were identified, including consumption disorder, consumption acceptance, delinquency, forgetfulness, sociocultural factors, and the impact of others.
- A total of 23 main categories were identified within these themes.
Conclusions:
- Medication adherence in the elderly is multifactorial, influenced by both personal and environmental factors.
- Positive changes in managing medication adherence require strategic planning, targeted interventions, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the healthcare system.
- Addressing these determinants is essential for improving the health outcomes of older adults and the wider community.
