Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

547
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Introspection01:29

Introspection

86
Introspection, long upheld as a reliable route to self-knowledge, involves examining one's thoughts, emotions, and mental processes. It underpins many psychological practices, from mindfulness meditation to psychotherapy and self-help strategies. However, empirical evidence challenges the accuracy of introspection as a means of understanding oneself.Limitations of Introspective InsightSeminal work by Nisbett and Wilson demonstrated that individuals are frequently unaware of the true causes...

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.6K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Social Foundations of Self III: Self-Evaluation

70
Self-evaluation is the process by which individuals assess their abilities, behaviors, and characteristics based on feedback from others. Charles H. Cooley observed that a person’s self-perception is primarily influenced by how others see and judge them. He suggested that individuals form their identities based on their interpretations of others' reactions. As a result, social interactions play a crucial role in shaping self-esteem and personal identity. These external evaluations often...

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

121
The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...

Self-Discrepancy and Its Effects01:29

Self-Discrepancy and Its Effects

122
Self-discrepancy theory explains how people compare their actual self to their ideal and ought selves and how mismatches between these self-guides can lead to emotional distress. Developed by E. Tory Higgins, the theory distinguishes among three components of self-concept: the actual self, the ideal self, and the ought self. These refer respectively to how individuals perceive themselves, how they aspire to be, and how they believe they are obligated to be. Emotional well-being, self-esteem,...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Personality Assessment
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Intrapersonal problems significantly impact personality functioning and well-being.
  • Existing measures may not fully capture the complexity of self-related difficulties.
  • A need exists for a comprehensive and efficient assessment tool for intrapersonal issues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the Intrapersonal Problems Rating Scales (IPRS).
  • To identify and measure distinct domains of intrapersonal problems.
  • To provide a tool for researchers and practitioners to assess self-related functioning.

Main Methods:

  • Factor analysis of over 200 self-rated problems to identify domains.
  • Scale construction and psychometric evaluation in an independent sample.
  • Correlational analyses to establish convergent and discriminant validity with other measures.

Main Results:

  • Seven distinct domains of intrapersonal problems were identified: Emotion Dysregulation, Internalizing, Lack of Will, Externalizing, Scrupulousness, Fantasy Proneness, and Apathy.
  • The IPRS demonstrated good psychometric properties, including validity and reliability.
  • The scales predicted various attitudinal and behavioral criteria, independent of personality traits.

Conclusions:

  • The IPRS is a psychometrically sound instrument for assessing intrapersonal problems.
  • It offers unique insights beyond traditional personality trait measures.
  • The IPRS can be valuable for identifying, understanding, and monitoring intrapersonal difficulties in clinical and research settings.
