Summary

Hyperthyroid patients frequently develop melasma, a facial hyperpigmentation disorder. However, three months of hyperthyroid therapy did not significantly improve melasma severity in this study.

Background:

  • Melasma (chloasma) is a chronic facial hyperpigmentation disorder with unclear pathogenesis.
  • Thyroid hormones are implicated in melasma development.
  • This study investigated the link between hyperthyroidism and melasma severity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Determine the prevalence of melasma in hyperthyroid patients.
  • Assess the impact of hyperthyroid therapy on melasma severity.

Main Methods:

  • A quasi-experimental pre-post intervention study was conducted.
  • Twenty-three hyperthyroid patients with melasma were evaluated.
  • Melasma severity was measured using the modified Melasma Area and Severity Index (mMASI) before and after 3 months of therapy.

Main Results:

  • Melasma was present in 65% of 69 hyperthyroid patients.
  • No significant change in mMASI scores was observed after therapy (p > 0.05).
  • Dermoscopy revealed no significant differences in melasma features.

Conclusions:

  • Three months of hyperthyroid therapy does not significantly improve melasma severity.
  • Further research is needed to understand the relationship between thyroid hormones and melasma.
