Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pathology
  • Internal Medicine

Background:

  • Confluent and reticulate papillomatosis (CRP) is an uncommon benign keratinization disorder with limited research, especially in Indian literature.
  • Existing studies on CRP are primarily case reports, necessitating larger cohort investigations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical and histopathological characteristics of Confluent and reticulate papillomatosis (CRP).
  • To evaluate the treatment response in patients diagnosed with CRP.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 30 patients diagnosed with Confluent and reticulate papillomatosis (CRP).
  • Morphological pattern analysis, histopathological examination, and assessment of treatment efficacy.
  • KOH mount and biopsy for diagnostic confirmation.

Main Results:

  • The study included 30 patients with CRP, with a female predominance (1:1.5 ratio) and a mean age of onset of 27.3 years.
  • Lesions were predominantly on the upper trunk (66.7%), often asymptomatic (60%).
  • Minocycline demonstrated high efficacy, with 13/18 patients achieving complete clearance within 3 weeks; doxycycline was satisfactory, while azithromycin showed less favorable results.

Conclusions:

  • Confluent and reticulate papillomatosis (CRP) is uncommon, with this study providing a large cohort analysis from India.
  • The study observed a higher prevalence in females and an association with hypothyroidism, contrasting with some Western studies.
  • Minocycline is reinforced as a key treatment for chronic and recurrent CRP cases, with observed morphological variants including atrophic and verrucous lesions.
