Area of Science:

  • Dental Education
  • Global Health
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Global health initiatives are increasingly recognized for their importance in professional education.
  • Dental schools are exploring ways to integrate global health concepts into their curricula.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To survey and describe the key curricular and extracurricular components of global health programs in U.S. dental schools.
  • To identify common domains and components within these programs.

Main Methods:

  • A 22-item web-based survey was distributed to administrators at all 66 U.S. dental schools.
  • Survey topics included curricular and extracurricular global health activities, such as Short-term Experiences in Global Health (STEGHs).
  • Program components were classified into three domains: Program Support, Academic Teaching, and STEGHs.

Main Results:

  • 72% of respondents agreed that global health should be part of the dental curriculum.
  • 81% agreed that students benefit from global health experiences.
  • 44% of schools offered didactic global health courses, and 62% offered STEGHs.

Conclusions:

  • U.S. dental schools offer a mix of didactic courses and STEGH programs within their global health education.
  • Global health education in dental schools can enhance students' ability to manage diverse patient populations.
  • Further integration of global health is supported by faculty and administrators.
