Background:

The brain's dynamic states arise from integrating and segregating large-scale brain networks.
Mechanisms of brain network integration are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the fundamental mechanisms of brain network integration during the resting state.
To identify underlying temporal patterns in brain activity.

Main Methods:

Analysis of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data.
Identification of synchronization modes (clusters of temporally aligned functional hubs).
Simulation of attacks on the temporal synchronization mechanism.

Main Results:

The brain visits a limited number of synchronization modes during rest.
These modes alternate over time, forming temporal loops.
Brain integration is vulnerable to disruptions in this temporal synchronization.

Conclusions:

Resting-state synchronization modes may represent a temporal brain template.
This template could be crucial for responding to environmental demands.
Understanding these modes is key to comprehending brain function and vulnerability.
