Imaging Studies III: Computed Tomography

112
DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...

Synthesis and Regulation of Thyroid Hormones01:20

Synthesis and Regulation of Thyroid Hormones

6.1K
Low blood levels of the thyroid hormones — triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) — signal the hypothalamus to release the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). TRH then reaches the pituitary gland and stimulates the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH) into the bloodstream.
Upon reaching the thyroid gland, TSH stimulates the follicular cells' active uptake of iodide ions from the blood. The ions diffuse to the apical surface of the cells and are oxidized to iodine. The...

The Thyroid Gland01:23

The Thyroid Gland

5.3K
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck and covers the anterior surface of the trachea. The gland has two lateral lobes connected by a thin tissue mass called the isthmus. Internally, each lobe comprises many small spherical structures known as thyroid follicles, surrounded by a network of blood vessels.
The follicles have a central cavity lined by simple cuboidal to squamous epithelial cells called follicular cells. These cells produce the glycoprotein...

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System V: CT

130
Cardiac computed tomography (CT) scanning is an advanced cardiac imaging technique that utilizes CT technology, with or without intravenous (IV) contrast, to produce accurate cross-sectional virtual slices of specific areas of the heart, coronary circulation, and major blood vessels such as the aorta, pulmonary veins, and arteries. The computer processes these slices to generate three-dimensional images. Multidetector CT (MDCT) is a rapid form of CT scanning that captures multiple slices...

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System III: X-Ray

345
The most common cardiovascular diagnostic test is an X-ray. It produces images of the heart, blood vessels, and adjacent structures.
Definition and Purpose
An X-ray, or radiograph, is a non-invasive method that uses ionizing radiation to take images of internal structures. It is mainly used in cardiac imaging to examine the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels, aiming to identify abnormalities in the heart's size, shape, and position, such as heart failure, congenital defects, and vascular...

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique that provides crucial insights into the body's physiological functions at a molecular level. It is an indispensable resource for diagnosing, staging, and monitoring various illnesses, notably cancer, neurological disorders, and cardiovascular conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Endocrinology
  • Diagnostic Imaging
  • Congenital Disorders

Background:

  • Thyroid dysgenesis is a leading cause of permanent congenital hypothyroidism.
  • Accurate diagnosis of thyroid dysgenesis is crucial for timely intervention.
  • Thyroid ultrasonography and thyroid scans are key imaging modalities for evaluating thyroid anatomy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the diagnostic accuracy of thyroid ultrasonography and thyroid scans in identifying thyroid dysgenesis.
  • To determine the clinical utility of each imaging method for diagnosing congenital hypothyroidism.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of clinical characteristics and imaging findings.
  • Analysis of 61 patients under 7 years of age evaluated by thyroid scan.
  • Inclusion of 19 patients initially diagnosed with thyroid dysgenesis by scan.

Main Results:

  • Thyroid ultrasonography demonstrated higher sensitivity and specificity for normal-sized eutopic glands.
  • Thyroid scan was more effective in detecting ectopic thyroid tissue.
  • Discrepancies noted: ultrasonography identified hypoplasia in 8 patients, with subsequent scan confirming ectopia in 4 and aplasia in 1.

Conclusions:

  • Thyroid ultrasonography is recommended as the initial imaging study for assessing normal-sized eutopic thyroid glands.
  • Thyroid scan should be utilized when ultrasonography suggests hypoplasia or aplasia to investigate for ectopia.
