We developed a lab-on-a-chip instrument for producing highly uniform lipid-coated microbubbles. This technology enables precise control over microbubble size and production rate for advanced ultrasound imaging and therapy applications.
Area of Science:
- Biomedical Engineering
- Microfluidics
- Nanotechnology
Background:
- Monodisperse lipid-coated microbubbles are crucial for advanced ultrasound contrast agents.
- Existing methods face challenges in production rate and size control.
Purpose of the Study:
- To present a novel lab-on-a-chip instrument for high-throughput, monodisperse microbubble generation.
- To demonstrate real-time feedback control for precise microbubble size and production rate management.
Main Methods:
- Development of a stand-alone microfluidic device.
- Integration of an optical transmission-based measurement technique for real-time monitoring.
- Implementation of a feedback loop for automated control of bubble radius and production rate.
Main Results:
- Achieved high monodispersity in microbubble production at rates up to 10^6 bubbles/s.
- Demonstrated precise control over on-chip bubble radii from 2.5 μm to 20 μm.
- Observed bubble size stabilization post-formation without compromising monodispersity.
Conclusions:
- The developed instrument offers stable, controlled, and safe operation for microbubble generation.
- The feedback control system provides precise management of microbubble size distribution.
- This technology facilitates the development of microfluidic platforms for non-specialist users and enhances ultrasound agent applications.
