A new analytical method was developed to measure Gadolinium-148 (¹⁴⁸Gd) in environmental and biological samples. This method utilizes advanced chromatography techniques and achieves a maximum recovery of 75% for Gadolinium determination.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Chemistry
- Analytical Chemistry
- Radiochemistry
Background:
- Accurate determination of Gadolinium-148 (¹⁴⁸Gd) is crucial for environmental monitoring and bioassay.
- Existing analytical methods may require refinement for specific sample matrices.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a robust analytical method for ¹⁴⁸Gd determination.
- To enable accurate quantification of ¹⁴⁸Gd in diverse environmental and bioassay samples.
Main Methods:
- Utilized a combination of anion exchange resin, extraction chromatography, and cation exchange resin.
- Employed alkaline fusion for solid sample dissolution and calcium oxalate co-precipitation for liquid sample preconcentration.
- Validated the method using natural Gadolinium (¹⁵⁷Gd) and Inductively Coupled Plasma - Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry (ICP-QQQ-MS).
Main Results:
- Successfully developed a multi-step chromatographic method for Gd separation and purification.
- Achieved a maximum total method recovery of 75% for Gadolinium determination.
- Demonstrated the applicability of the method for environmental and bioassay samples.
Conclusions:
- The developed analytical method provides a reliable approach for ¹⁴⁸Gd quantification.
- The method's effectiveness in sample preparation and purification was confirmed.
- Further application of this method can enhance environmental surveillance and human exposure assessments related to Gadolinium isotopes.
