Childhood atopic dermatitis (AD) is linked to more behavioral issues in children. Persistent AD, especially with sleep problems, is associated with a wide range of aberrant behaviors throughout childhood and adolescence.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Dermatology
- Child Psychology
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
- AD is frequently linked to significant comorbidities including sleep disturbances, psychosocial distress, anxiety, and depression.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between atopic dermatitis (AD) and aberrant childhood behaviors.
- To explore the relationship between persistent AD and behavioral outcomes.
Main Methods:
- Utilized data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal cohort of 4898 urban children.
- Employed multivariable logistic regression, Poisson regression, and repeated-measures logistic regression to analyze behavioral data at ages 5, 9, and 15.
Main Results:
- Atopic dermatitis (AD) was associated with higher mean behavioral scores at ages 5, 9, and 15.
- Persistent AD correlated with increased behavioral problems at age 15.
- AD was linked to 12 specific aberrant behaviors, including fighting, physical aggression, sullenness, worrying, and threatening behavior.
Conclusions:
- Childhood atopic dermatitis (AD), particularly persistent cases, is associated with a broad spectrum of behavioral problems.
- Sleep disturbances in children with AD exacerbate behavioral issues, including underactivity, threatening behavior, sullenness, and nervousness.
