Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can cause necrotizing pancreatitis. This case report highlights acute abdomen as a COVID-19 manifestation, including necrotizing pancreatitis in differential diagnoses.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology and Hepatology
- Infectious Diseases
- Critical Care Medicine
Background:
- The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has diverse clinical presentations.
- Gastrointestinal symptoms, including acute abdomen, are recognized manifestations of COVID-19.
- Previous reports suggest a link between SARS-CoV-2 infection and acute pancreatitis.
Observation:
- This case report details a patient experiencing necrotizing pancreatitis attributed to SARS-CoV-2 infection.
- The patient presented with symptoms indicative of acute abdomen.
- Necrotizing pancreatitis represents a severe gastrointestinal complication associated with COVID-19.
Findings:
- SARS-CoV-2 infection can directly lead to severe pancreatic inflammation, specifically necrotizing pancreatitis.
- The findings underscore the potential for severe abdominal pathology in COVID-19 patients.
- This case expands the spectrum of gastrointestinal complications linked to SARS-CoV-2.
Implications:
- Clinicians should consider necrotizing pancreatitis in the differential diagnosis of acute abdomen in COVID-19 patients.
- Early recognition and management of pancreatic complications are crucial for improving outcomes in severe COVID-19.
- Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying SARS-CoV-2-induced pancreatitis.

Acute Pancreatitis II: Clinical Manifestations and Management
Acute Pancreatitis I: Introduction
Acute pancreatitis is characterized by rapid inflammation of the pancreas, often caused by factors like gallstone blockage or excessive alcohol consumption. Chronic pancreatitis, on the other hand, is a slow, progressive inflammation that may result from long-term alcohol abuse, obstructions in the pancreatic duct, or genetic factors.
The causes of acute pancreatitis include:
Chronic Pancreatitis I: Introduction
Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas, which occurs when the immune system becomes active and causes swelling, pain, and disruptions in organ function. Pancreatitis can manifest as either an acute or chronic condition.
Acute pancreatitis arises suddenly and lasts for a brief duration, while chronic pancreatitis is a long-term affliction...
