Clinical Applications of Epidermal Stem Cells01:19

Clinical Applications of Epidermal Stem Cells

Epidermal stem cells (EpiSCs) are mainly located at the basal layer of the epidermis. These cells repair minor injuries of the skin and replace dead skin cells. However, EpiSCs’ cannot heal severe wounds such as major burns or those from diabetes or hereditary disorders. In such cases, culturing the epidermal stem cells from the patient is possible and has yielded successful treatment options, such as laboratory-grown skin grafts. These grafts are synthesized using a patient’s own EpiSCs...

Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination

Meaning of Cystoscopic Examination:Cystoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool in urology that is used to assess the structure and function of the genitourinary system. It provides a direct view of the urethra, bladder, and, in some cases, the ureteral openings. This procedure helps detect structural abnormalities, infections, cancers, and blockages in the urinary tract. There are two types of cystoscopy:Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed in outpatient settings due to its less invasive...
Acne Infection01:27

Acne Infection

Acne is a multifactorial skin condition primarily affecting adolescents and young adults, with a global prevalence estimated to exceed 75% in this demographic. The condition is characterized by the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules, pustules, nodules, and, in severe cases, cysts, particularly in areas rich in sebaceous glands such as the face, neck, chest, and back. The pathogenesis involves increased sebum production, follicular hyperkeratinization, colonization by...

Summary

A rare renal epidermoid cyst was diagnosed in a 56-year-old male presenting with lumbar pain and hematuria. Complete surgical resection led to a satisfactory clinical outcome for this benign kidney lesion.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Pathology
  • Nephrology

Background:

  • Renal masses require accurate diagnosis and management.
  • Epidermoid cysts of the kidney are rare entities.

Observation:

  • A 56-year-old male presented with lumbar pain, hematuria, and dysuria.
  • Radiology identified a renal mass in the upper pole of the right kidney.
  • Histological examination confirmed the mass as a renal epidermoid cyst.

Findings:

  • Renal epidermoid cysts are infrequent and exhibit benign biological behavior.
  • The patient underwent partial nephrectomy for tumor resection.
  • Complete resection resulted in a satisfactory clinical course.

Implications:

  • Complete resection is an effective treatment for renal epidermoid cysts.
  • Further research into the etiology of renal epidermoid cysts may be warranted.
  • This case highlights the importance of histological diagnosis for rare renal lesions.
