Background:

Munchausen by internet (MBI) involves individuals fabricating illnesses online for emotional satisfaction.
This disorder, a form of factitious disorder, can target various individuals and professionals.

Observation:

The study details five cases where individuals used social media to report fictitious perinatal illnesses and crises in real-time.
These deceptions included fabricated neonatal deaths and involved multiple health professionals concurrently or serially.
The perpetrators, referred to as "posers," sometimes used multiple personas ("sock puppets").

Findings:

This research presents the first evidence of Munchausen by internet targeting birthing doulas.
The fabricated perinatal events caused significant disruption, with doulas providing many hours of support for non-existent situations.
Affected doulas experienced negative emotions including anger and betrayal.

Implications:

Healthcare professionals offering online services must be aware of Munchausen by internet risks.
Vigilance is crucial to prevent the exploitation of healthcare providers through online deception.
Understanding MBI's impact on perinatal support providers is essential for safeguarding their well-being.
