Visual Agnosia01:12

Visual Agnosia

552
Visual agnosia is a condition characterized by the inability to recognize visually presented objects despite having normal vision. For instance, a person with visual agnosia can describe the shape and color of an object but cannot identify or name it. This impairment does not affect their visual field, acuity, color vision, brightness discrimination, language, or memory. An example of this condition in a social setting is someone at a dinner party asking for "that silver thing with a round...

Drug Dependence01:17

Drug Dependence

1.3K
Medications are typically administered to achieve therapeutic effects. Some drugs can modify an individual's mood and perception, frequently resulting in various enjoyable experiences. However, this can result in drug dependency, a condition marked by continuous drug use despite potential negative consequences. Drug dependency primarily falls into two categories: psychological and physical dependence. Psychological dependence occurs when the pleasurable feelings induced by the drug...

CNS Depressants: Alcohol and Nicotine

632
Ethanol, a clear colorless alcohol, has been consumed by humans for millennia, but its effects on the body are far from benign. At lower doses, it induces decreased inhibitions and loquaciousness, leading to its social appeal. However, it can cause severe consequences at higher doses, such as coma and respiratory depression, due to its zero-order elimination kinetics. Chronic ethanol abuse wreaks havoc on multiple organ systems, particularly the CNS and the liver. Abrupt cessation of ethanol...

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

42.2K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Photoreceptors and Visual Pathways

7.5K
At the molecular level, visual signals trigger transformations in photopigment molecules, resulting in changes in the photoreceptor cell's membrane potential. The photon's energy level is denoted by its wavelength, with each specific wavelength of visible light associated with a distinct color. The spectral range of visible light, classified as electromagnetic radiation, spans from 380 to 720 nm. Electromagnetic radiation wavelengths exceeding 720 nm fall under the infrared category,...

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep01:24

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

258
Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.
Understanding the concepts of physical dependence,...

Summary

Alcohol Dependence Syndrome (ADS) significantly impacts visual functions like acuity and contrast sensitivity in both consumers and abstainers. Psychological distress, particularly depression and paranoia, also differs between consumer and abstainer groups.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology and Vision Science
  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Alcohol Dependence Syndrome (ADS) is characterized by excessive alcohol consumption leading to psychological, physical, social, and economic issues.
  • Alcohol intake negatively affects motor, proprioceptive, and cognitive functions, including attention.
  • Visual function deficits are common but not fully characterized in ADS patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate visual function, attention, and psychological profiles in patients with Alcohol Dependence Syndrome.
  • To compare these functions between alcohol consumers and abstainers within the ADS group.

Main Methods:

  • A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study involving 176 ADS patients (121 consumers, 55 abstainers).
  • Visual function assessed using an 11-test orthoptic examination protocol.
  • Psychological status evaluated using the Portuguese version of the Brief Symptom Inventory.

Main Results:

  • Visual acuity (80.39%), contrast sensitivity (67.50%), and stereopsis (62.75%) were notably affected.
  • Both consumer and abstainer groups showed visual function impairments.
  • Consumers reported higher depression and paranoia scores; abstainers reported higher obsession scores, with significant differences in depression and paranoid ideation between groups.

Conclusions:

  • Visual function deficits, including acuity, contrast sensitivity, and stereopsis, are prevalent in ADS patients.
  • Psychopathological differences exist between consumers and abstainers.
  • Rehabilitation programs for ADS should integrate assessments of visual function, attention, and psychological status.
