Fractures: Bone Repair01:27

Fractures: Bone Repair

4.2K
Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the...

Bone Remodeling01:40

Bone Remodeling

39.3K
Bone remodeling is a continuous and balanced process of bone resorption by osteoclasts and bone formation by osteoblasts. In adults, it helps maintain bone mass and calcium homeostasis. While mechanical stress can stimulate turnover as part of the normal maintenance and reparative process, several hormones also regulate bone remodeling.

Summary

Bone defects in the jaw can be effectively treated using bone graft material derived from a patient's own extracted teeth. This regenerative approach shows promising results for restoring alveolar bone, particularly in the esthetic zone.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Regenerative Medicine
  • Oral Surgery

Background:

  • Alveolar bone defects in the maxilla and mandible pose significant challenges in modern implantology, especially in esthetic regions.
  • Causes include cysts, unerupted teeth, and traumatic extractions, leading to complex bone loss.
  • Autogenous bone graft materials offer a potential solution for bone tissue regeneration.

Observation:

  • A case report details bone augmentation in a 26-year-old male using demineralized dentin and dentin blocks from an extracted tooth.
  • The material was processed using the BonMaker device.
  • A systematic literature review analyzed 25 articles published between 1975 and 2020.

Findings:

  • Tooth-derived bone graft material effectively restores alveolar bone defects.
  • The case study and literature review indicate satisfying results with this regenerative approach.
  • The material shows potential for successful bone augmentation in the esthetic zone.

Implications:

  • Extracted teeth can be repurposed as a valuable source for autogenous bone graft material.
  • This technique offers a viable option for bone regeneration in implantology.
  • Further research is warranted to confirm osteogenic effects and long-term safety.
