Low Serum Uric Acid Predicts Risk of a Composite Disease Endpoint

Low serum uric acid (SUA) levels predict adverse outcomes, particularly non-fatal events in men. However, high SUA may indicate risks for diabetic women, suggesting complex associations with health.

- Adverse outcomes in diabetic women were associated with intermediate and high SUA tertiles.
Conclusions:
- An inverse association between SUA and adverse outcomes, particularly in men, suggests a role for uric acid in autoimmune processes.
- The positive association of SUA with adverse outcomes in diabetic women may be linked to high-density lipoprotein dysfunction.
