Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Radiation Oncology

Background:

  • Ewing's sarcoma is a rare bone and soft tissue cancer.
  • Prognostic factors for Ewing's sarcoma require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify prognostic factors in Ewing's sarcoma.
  • To evaluate the impact of surgical resection on patient outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 46 Ewing's sarcoma cases.
  • Analysis of prognostic factors including surgical resection, tumor size, and primary site.
  • Cox multivariate analyses were performed.

Main Results:

  • Surgical resection showed a trend towards improved survival (p=0.07 after exclusions).
  • Primary tumor site was a significant prognostic factor (p<0.0002).
  • Combined surgical resection and irradiation may reduce local failure.

Conclusions:

  • Primary tumor site is a significant prognostic factor for Ewing's sarcoma.
  • Surgical resection, particularly when combined with local irradiation, may offer prognostic benefits.
