Ovaries01:26

Ovaries

1.6K
The ovaries are roughly the size of almonds and measure approximately 2 to 3 centimeters in length. These paired structures are situated within the pelvic region and are anchored by the mesovarium—a peritoneal extension that also connects them to the wider structure of the broad ligament. The support system extends to the suspensory ligament, housing blood and lymphatic vessels. In addition, the ovarian ligament tethers the ovaries to the uterus.

Oogenesis02:07

Oogenesis

67.3K
In human women, oogenesis produces one mature egg cell or ovum for every precursor cell that enters meiosis. This process differs in two unique ways from the equivalent procedure of spermatogenesis in males. First, meiotic divisions during oogenesis are asymmetric, meaning that a large oocyte (containing most of the cytoplasm) and minor polar body are produced as a result of meiosis I, and again following meiosis II. Since only oocytes will go on to form embryos if fertilized, this unequal...

Summary

This case report details a rare instance of an ectopic ovarian cystadenoma mimicking a splenic cyst. It highlights the importance of considering unusual causes for splenic lesions, especially when recurrent.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Gynecologic Oncology

Background:

  • Splenic cysts are common, often resulting from trauma or infection.
  • Management strategies for splenic cysts depend on etiology, symptoms, and size.
  • Larger, symptomatic cysts (>5 cm) may require surgical intervention, including spleen-preserving techniques or splenectomy.

Observation:

  • This report presents a rare case of an ectopic ovarian cystadenoma.
  • The cystadenoma presented clinically as a large, recurrent splenic cyst.
  • This presentation mimicked typical splenic cyst pathologies.

Findings:

  • Ectopic ovarian cystadenoma is an exceedingly rare cause of splenic cysts.
  • The recurrent nature of the splenic cyst in this case was attributed to the underlying ovarian neoplasm.

  • Diagnostic challenges arise when splenic lesions have non-splenic origins.
  • Implications:

    • Clinicians should consider rare differential diagnoses for splenic cysts, particularly recurrent or unusually large ones.
    • This case underscores the need for comprehensive evaluation to rule out ectopic pathologies.
    • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management and to prevent recurrence.
