The Brief COPE, a coping measure, has a debated factor structure. This review suggests a more parsimonious factor structure may represent the Brief COPE effectively, warranting further research.
Area of Science:
- Psychological Measurement
- Psychometrics
- Coping Strategies
Background:
- The Brief COPE is a 28-item, 14-factor coping inventory.
- Its factor structure has been subject to ongoing debate among researchers.
- Previous attempts to shorten the inventory have not resolved structural ambiguities.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review existing literature on the Brief COPE's factor structure.
- To determine if a more parsimonious factor structure can be identified.
- To assess the psychometric properties and factor validity of the Brief COPE.
Main Methods:
- Systematic review of peer-reviewed studies (1997-2021).
- Searched databases: CINAHL, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, Medline, PubMed, Scopus.
- Included studies using keywords: "Brief COPE" and "factor, valid*" or "psychometric".
- Analyzed 85 eligible articles using principal components and confirmatory factor analyses.
Main Results:
- Identified factor structures ranged from 2 to 15 factors.
- Dichotomous factor structures were most frequently reported (25%).
- Only 8 studies examined the original 14-factor structure.
- A substantial number of studies (85) met inclusion criteria.
Conclusions:
- A reduced number of factors may adequately represent the Brief COPE.
- The factor structure of the Brief COPE requires further investigation.
- Research is needed to develop and test a condensed version of the Brief COPE.
