Three young patients experienced sudden vision loss due to acute frosted retinal periphlebitis, a condition causing inflammation around retinal veins. Oral corticosteroids led to rapid visual recovery in most affected eyes.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Vascular Diseases

Background:

  • Acute visual loss can stem from various retinal conditions.
  • Retinal periphlebitis involves inflammation of blood vessels in the retina.

Observation:

  • Three previously healthy young patients presented with acute, severe visual loss.
  • Diffuse bilateral retinal periphlebitis, resembling "frosted tree branches," was observed in all patients.
  • Initial visual acuity varied significantly, from 20/20 to hand motions.

Findings:

  • All patients received oral corticosteroid therapy.
  • Rapid visual improvement was noted in all patients following treatment.
  • Five out of six affected eyes regained a visual acuity of 20/20.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • The findings support "acute frosted retinal periphlebitis" as an accurate descriptor for this clinical presentation.
  • This condition, previously termed "frosted branch angiitis" in Japan, appears responsive to corticosteroid treatment.
  • Early diagnosis and intervention with corticosteroids may preserve vision in affected individuals.
