Summary

Adolescent cleft palate patients often have ear issues. While most had normal hearing, grommets did not improve long-term hearing but were linked to tympanosclerosis, a middle ear condition.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Pediatric Medicine
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Otitis media with effusion is common in infants with cleft palate.
  • This condition can impact speech, language, and educational development.
  • Understanding long-term ear health in this population is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the incidence and nature of ear disease in adolescents with a history of cleft palate repair.
  • To assess the long-term effects of grommet insertion on hearing and middle ear status.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 50 adolescent patients who underwent cleft palate repair.
  • Analysis of hearing, middle ear pressures, and tympanic membrane status.
  • Evaluation of the association between grommet insertion, cleft type, and ear disease.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Most patients (81%) had normal hearing and (86%) normal middle ear pressures.
  • Half of the patients exhibited tympanic membrane abnormalities.
  • Grommet insertion was associated with tympanosclerosis but not improved long-term hearing.

Conclusions:

  • While many adolescents with repaired cleft palates have good hearing, tympanic membrane abnormalities are common.
  • Grommet insertion in infancy may lead to tympanosclerosis without clear long-term hearing benefits.
  • Early intervention with grommets during palatal repair is recommended to address potential hearing issues in cleft palate infants.
