Summary

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) effectively treated chronic quadriceps tendinopathy in a patient who failed other therapies. This regenerative medicine approach shows promise for complex tendon injuries.

Background:

  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is increasingly recognized for its therapeutic potential in managing chronic tendinopathies.
  • Persistent musculoskeletal pain, particularly tendinopathies, often presents a challenge for conventional treatment modalities.

Observation:

  • A 47-year-old female patient experienced chronic left knee pain post-motor vehicle accident, diagnosed with distal quadriceps tendinosis and a partial vastus intermedius tear.
  • Standard conservative treatments were ineffective in alleviating her symptoms.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed the tendinosis and partial tear prior to intervention.

Findings:

  • A single PRP injection into the distal quadriceps tendon, combined with a structured physical therapy regimen, led to significant symptom improvement.
  • Follow-up MRI demonstrated a notable decrease in tendinosis, correlating with clinical recovery.

Implications:

  • This case represents the first reported instance of successful PRP injection for chronic quadriceps tendinopathy.
  • The findings suggest PRP is a viable therapeutic option for recalcitrant quadriceps tendinopathy, expanding regenerative orthopaedic treatments.
  • This case underscores the potential of PRP in addressing complex tendon injuries beyond previously documented applications.
