Obesity01:24

Obesity

858
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in...

Weightlessness01:01

Weightlessness

6.2K
When an object is dropped, it accelerates toward the center of the Earth. If the net external force on the object is its weight, it is said to be in free fall; that is, the only force acting on the object is gravity. Galileo was instrumental in showing that, in the absence of air resistance, all objects fall with the same acceleration g. However, when objects on the Earth fall downward, they are never truly in free fall, because there is always some upward resistance force from the air acting...

Apparent Weight01:09

Apparent Weight

9.2K
True weight is the measure of the gravitational force acting on an object. However, if the object accelerates, its measured weight is different from its true weight. Similar observations can be made when the object is submerged in water. An object's weight in water is its apparent weight, which is equal to the difference between its true weight and the buoyant forces.
Consider a person standing on a bathroom scale inside an elevator. If the scale is accurate at rest, its reading equals the...

Bulimia Nervosa01:30

Bulimia Nervosa

294
Bulimia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by a cyclical pattern of binge-and-purge eating pattern. It generally involves an episode of binge eating, followed by compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative use, or fasting, to prevent weight gain. Despite often maintaining a normal weight, individuals with bulimia are intensely preoccupied with their body image and harbor an overwhelming fear of gaining weight. This can contribute to the...

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

42.1K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.6K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Summary

A brief writing exercise focusing on body functionality, rather than appearance, reduced weight stigma and increased fat acceptance in women. This intervention shows promise for reducing antipathy toward higher-weight individuals.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Social Psychology
  • Health Psychology

Background:

  • Weight stigma is widespread and detrimental to psychological and physical health.
  • Existing weight stigma reduction strategies have limited effectiveness.
  • Research on novel interventions to combat weight stigma is needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate a new intervention for reducing weight stigma.
  • To test if a writing exercise on body functionality decreases weight stigma.

Main Methods:

  • 98 women were randomly assigned to write about a higher-weight woman's body functionality or her home.
  • Participants completed pretest and posttest assessments of weight stigma facets.
  • The study was pre-registered.

Main Results:

  • The body functionality writing group showed increased fat acceptance and social closeness.
  • No significant differences were observed in attribution complexity, responsibility, or likeability.
  • The intervention partially reduced weight stigma.

Conclusions:

  • A brief, functionality-focused writing intervention can reduce specific aspects of weight stigma.
  • This approach shows potential for future weight stigma reduction strategies.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the full impact of functionality-based interventions.
