Pulse Oximetry01:24

Pulse Oximetry

996
Pulse oximetry, or SpO2, is a non-invasive method for continuously monitoring arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2). This procedure involves attaching a probe or sensor to the patient's fingertip, forehead, earlobe, or nose bridge. The sensor works by detecting changes in oxygen saturation levels through light signals generated by the oximeter and reflected by the pulsing blood under the probe.
Purpose
Average SpO2 values are greater than 95%. If the readings fall below 90%, it indicates that...

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Technology
  • Physiology

Background:

  • The retina requires precise regulation of blood flow and oxygen levels.
  • Retinal blood flow is compromised in conditions like diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.
  • Noninvasive measurement of peripheral oxygen saturation is standard, but retinal oximetry is not yet clinically reliable.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current and emerging technologies for noninvasive retinal oximetry.
  • To discuss the challenges and future directions in measuring retinal oxygen saturation.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on retinal oximetry.
  • Analysis of current and developing noninvasive retinal oximetry technologies.

Main Results:

  • Current retinal oximetry technology is inadequate for clinical application.
  • Several new technologies are under development to address these limitations.

Conclusions:

  • Developing reliable noninvasive retinal oximetry is crucial for diagnosing and managing retinal diseases.
  • Advancements in retinal oximetry technology hold promise for future clinical practice.
