Summary

Doctor of Nursing Practice-prepared faculty report higher marginalization than Doctor of Philosophy-prepared faculty in academic settings. Addressing systemic issues and improving infrastructure can decrease marginalization for all doctorally prepared nursing faculty.

Background:

Ongoing debate exists regarding the role of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)-prepared faculty in academic settings.
Perceived barriers to DNP faculty integration include lack of respect, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient resources.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare self-reported marginalization levels between Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)-prepared nursing faculty in academic roles.
To identify potential differences in the academic experiences of doctorally prepared nursing faculty.

Main Methods:

A descriptive cross-sectional study design was employed.
Marginalization was assessed using the Englund Marginality Index.
Data were collected from doctorally prepared nursing faculty at Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited institutions.

Main Results:

DNP-prepared faculty reported significantly higher levels of marginalization (M=41.7, SD=9.6) compared to PhD-prepared faculty (M=39.1, SD=10.5).
An independent-samples t-test confirmed this statistically significant difference (t(583)=2.8, p=.006).

Conclusions:

Findings suggest DNP-prepared faculty experience greater marginalization within academic settings.
Recommendations include addressing systemic issues like shared governance and tenure systems.
Enhancing infrastructure to foster collaboration among all doctorally prepared faculty is crucial.
