Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Medical Simulation
  • Surgical Training Metrics

Background:

  • Metric-based surgical training offers objective assessment of neurosurgical performance.
  • Optimizing and monitoring training progression is crucial for skill development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate if innovative metrics from a physical neurosurgery trainer (PsT1) can distinguish between varying experience levels in neurosurgical tasks.
  • To explore the utility of quantitative metrics for assessing neurosurgical training progress.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-four participants (9 experts, 15 novices) performed four tasks on the PsT1 system.
  • Collected performance metrics (collision, precision, dissected area, time) and kinematic metrics (dispersion, path length, depth perception, velocity, acceleration, motion smoothness).

Main Results:

  • Experts demonstrated significantly lower execution times across all tasks compared to novices (P < 0.05).
  • Experts showed significantly better performance in most metrics, with trends towards better performance in dispersion and sectional area for specific tasks.

Conclusions:

  • The PsT1 platform's derived parameters can quantitatively differentiate between novice and expert neurosurgical skill levels.
  • Neurosurgical simulators providing performance metrics offer a valuable solution for resident education, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
