Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I

2.3K
A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.
The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...

Theoretical Foundations of Nursing Practice

14.9K
Theories play an essential role in organizing patient care. Theories refer to a proposed or followed belief, policy, or procedure that is the basis for action. Nursing theories are knowledge-based concepts that guide nurses' actions, influence nursing education and practice, and allow nurses to care for their patients.
Theories provide a perspective to assess patients' conditions and organize data and methods. They also assist in analyzing and interpreting information. They represent a...

Area of Science:

  • Occupational health
  • Workplace wellness
  • Public health

Background:

  • Occupational health professionals (OHPs) can promote holistic employee well-being through Total Worker Health® (TWH).
  • Understanding OHPs' TWH adoption, attitudes toward change, and knowledge is crucial for integrating TWH into practice.
  • Gaps exist in current knowledge regarding OHPs' TWH adoption and related attitudes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess occupational health professionals' knowledge of, attitudes toward, and adoption of Total Worker Health® (TWH).
  • To identify barriers and facilitators for TWH implementation among OHPs.
  • To understand the relationship between OHPs' attitudes toward change and TWH adoption.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study surveyed 4,777 national occupational health professionals (OHPs).
  • Electronic survey collected data on TWH knowledge, attitude toward change, resistance to change, leadership, organizational readiness, and leadership commitment.
  • Qualtrics platform used for data collection from a sample of 253 OHPs.

Main Results:

  • 74% of OHPs knew about TWH, but few had implemented programs.
  • A high percentage (74.0%) expressed openness to TWH implementation.
  • OHPs demonstrated favorable attitudes toward change (M=3.9) but indicated a need for education (56.0%).

Conclusions:

  • Most OHPs are aware of TWH and possess positive attitudes toward change, indicating potential for adoption.
  • Despite awareness, TWH adoption at worksites is currently low among OHPs.
  • Targeted education is needed to facilitate the integration of TWH programs into occupational health practices.
