Summary

This study found that individuals with the Type A Behavior Pattern (TABP) experienced more severe genital herpes symptoms. However, TABP was not linked to herpes recurrence frequency or other common health issues like allergies.

Background:

The Type A Behavior Pattern (TABP) is a behavioral construct characterized by competitiveness, impatience, and hostility.
Previous research suggested a link between TABP, allergies, and upper respiratory infections, but this has not been consistently replicated.
Genital herpes is a common viral infection with significant psychosocial impact.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between TABP and genital herpes.
To explore potential differences in symptom severity and recurrence patterns between Type A and Type B individuals with genital herpes.
To attempt replication of earlier findings on TABP associations with allergies and respiratory infections.

Main Methods:

A sample of 105 individuals from a herpes self-help group participated in the study.
The Jenkins Activity Survey (Form C) was used to assess TABP.
Data on genital herpes recurrence frequency, symptom severity, and treatment seeking were collected.

Main Results:

No significant difference in the prevalence of TABP was found in the herpes sample compared to general populations.
There were no differences in genital herpes recurrence frequency between Type A and Type B individuals.
Type A subjects reported significantly greater symptom severity during recurrences and were more likely to seek symptomatic treatment.

Conclusions:

The observed differences in symptom severity suggest potential physiological or immunological underpinnings related to TABP in genital herpes, rather than solely response bias.
The study failed to replicate previous associations between TABP and allergies or respiratory infections.
Further research is warranted to elucidate the complex interplay between behavioral patterns, immune response, and viral infections like genital herpes.
