Summary
Active surveillance (AS) is the preferred treatment for very low-risk prostate cancer. Our study shows favorable adherence to AS protocols, with most patients remaining on surveillance long-term.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Oncology
Background:
- Active surveillance (AS) is a standard approach for managing low-risk prostate cancer.
- This study examines the long-term outcomes and protocol adherence for AS in a real-world clinical setting.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the evolution of active surveillance as a treatment strategy for prostate cancer.
- To assess adherence to AS protocols within a specific patient cohort.
Main Methods:
- An ambispective study included 237 patients with prostate cancer between 2014-2019.
- 142 patients (60%) had at least 12 months of follow-up; descriptive statistics were used.
Main Results:
- Most patients (61.2%) were classified as very low risk (NCCN).
- After 5 years, 99.2% of patients remained alive, with high adherence to AS protocols (8 objectives achieved).
- 33.8% of patients discontinued AS within 5 years for various reasons.
Conclusions:
- Active surveillance is increasingly adopted for very low-risk prostate cancer patients.
- Favorable adherence to AS protocols was observed during the study period.
