Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of disordered eating, food insecurity, and weight status among TGNB youth and young adults.
  • To examine the relationships between these factors in the study population.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study conducted from September to December 2019 at a gender clinic.
  • Utilized five validated screening measures for disordered eating and food insecurity.
  • Collected data on demographics, medical transition, and body mass index (BMI).
  • Employed statistical analyses including Pearson's r, t-tests, ANOVA, and Tukey's HSD.

Main Results:

  • 164 TGNB participants aged 12-23 years completed the screening.
  • High prevalence rates were observed: 28.0% screened positive for disordered eating (SCOFF), 75.0% for restrictive eating (NIAS), and 21.2% for food insecurity (Hunger Vital Sign).
  • Transgender males reported higher rates of restrictive eating (NIAS) compared to transgender females (p=0.03).
  • Individuals with a prior eating disorder diagnosis showed significantly higher food insecurity (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

  • TGNB youth exhibit substantial risks for disordered eating and food insecurity.
  • Overweight and obesity are prevalent in this demographic.
  • Gender clinics should implement routine screenings for disordered eating, food insecurity, and weight concerns to facilitate timely referrals and support.
