Area of Science:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM)

Background:

  • Temporal hollowing is a common complication following temporalis muscle flap (TMF) surgery for maxillofacial reconstruction.
  • Accurate and predictable reconstruction of this defect is crucial for patient outcomes and esthetics.

Observation:

  • This case series evaluated ten patients undergoing maxillofacial reconstruction with TMF.
  • Preoperative planning involved virtual surgical planning software utilizing multislice CT scans.
  • Patient-specific implants (PSIs) were fabricated from polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) material.

Findings:

  • The study demonstrated a highly accurate duplication of PSIs using a template-molding workflow.
  • Postoperative follow-up for 12 months showed no signs of infection or implant mobilization.
  • A point-based analysis revealed a mean difference of 0.0373 (±0.3036) mm between the fabricated implants and the 3D preoperative plan.

Implications:

  • Immediate CAD/CAM reconstruction with PEKK PSIs is a viable and accurate treatment option for temporal hollowing.
  • The use of PEKK PSIs leads to uneventful healing and high esthetic acceptance by patients.
  • This workflow offers a predictable solution for improving patient appearance and satisfaction after TMF surgery.
