Post-traumatic Stress Disorder01:27

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

186
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium.
Symptoms and Behavioral Manifestations
A spectrum of distressing symptoms characterizes PTSD. Recurrent flashbacks, where individuals involuntarily relive traumatic events,...

Sources of Self-Esteem II: Performance Feedback

52
Self-esteem is intricately tied to our perception of competence and our ability to exert control over our lives. One of the primary sources of this perception is performance feedback — the ongoing evaluation of our actions in terms of success and failure. According to Franks and Marolla (1976), people derive self-worth from experiencing themselves as causal agents, capable of achieving goals and overcoming obstacles. This process nurtures a critical component of self-esteem:...

Traumatic Memory01:20

Traumatic Memory

326
Emotionally traumatic events often lead to memories that are exceptionally vivid and enduring, sometimes persisting with remarkable clarity throughout an individual's life. A classic example of this phenomenon is a person who survives a car accident. Even years later, they may recall every detail of the event with startling accuracy — the screeching of the tires, the jarring impact, and the acrid smell of burning rubber. Such vividness contrasts sharply with how an individual...

Nursing Assessment01:29

Nursing Assessment

8.5K
The two sources for collecting information are primary and secondary. After gathering information, interpretation and validation help to complete the data. The purpose of assessment is to establish data with the initial information, to interpret data about the patient's perceived needs and health problems, and to respond to these problems identified.
The nurse collects all aspects of the patient's health in the initial assessment, establishing priorities for ongoing focused assessments...

Humanistic Therapy01:24

Humanistic Therapy

173
Humanistic therapies emphasize personal growth, self-understanding, and the fulfillment of human potential. Rooted in the belief that individuals inherently strive toward self-actualization, these approaches encourage clients to explore their feelings and experiences in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. Humanistic therapies differ from psychodynamic approaches by focusing on conscious experiences, present circumstances, and the potential for self-improvement rather than past conflicts...

Psychodynamic Therapy01:29

Psychodynamic Therapy

227
Psychodynamic therapies emphasize the exploration of unconscious processes and early childhood experiences as fundamental contributors to psychological difficulties. These therapies, deeply rooted in Freud's psychoanalytic theory, aim to uncover and resolve unconscious conflicts, granting individuals insights that promote emotional and behavioral healing. Contemporary psychodynamic approaches have evolved, integrating a broader range of influences and methodologies while still valuing the...

Summary

Multidisciplinary trauma teams assess resident performance differently, with communication being key. Incorporating multisource feedback (MSF) can improve assessment quality in trauma resuscitations.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Healthcare Quality Improvement

Background:

  • Trauma resuscitations demand complex clinical and non-clinical skills.
  • Assessing these skills, particularly non-clinical ones, presents significant challenges in real-time clinical settings.
  • Multisource feedback (MSF) offers a structured approach to workplace-based assessment, observing learners directly and evaluating non-technical skills.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the assessment priorities of various trauma team members regarding resident trauma team captain (TTC) performance.
  • To describe the nature of current TTC performance assessments.
  • To evaluate the perceived utility of integrating MSF into trauma resuscitation assessments.

Main Methods:

  • Observation of 10 trauma team activations.
  • Semistructured interviews with trauma team leaders (TTL), TTCs, and registered nurses (RNs) post-activation.
  • Coding of interview transcripts based on crisis resource management skills (leadership, communication, situational awareness, resource utilization, problem-solving) and sentiment (positive, negative, neutral).

Main Results:

  • Communication skills were the most frequently mentioned by all assessor groups.
  • Trauma team leaders (TTL) prioritized leadership (31%), while RNs (15%) and TTCs (29%) focused more on situational awareness.
  • Positive assessments were common from RNs (51%) and TTLs (42%), contrasting with negative self-assessments from TTCs (45%).
  • 100% of TTC and TTL respondents believed MSF would enhance feedback quality, compared to 66% of RNs.

Conclusions:

  • Different professional groups within trauma teams emphasize distinct aspects when assessing TTC performance.
  • Integrating MSF into trauma resuscitation settings holds significant potential to improve the assessment of difficult-to-observe non-clinical skills.
  • MSF can enhance the learning environment and provide more comprehensive feedback for resident development in high-stakes trauma care.
