Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

12.8K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

210
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

Long-term Potentiation01:35

Long-term Potentiation

56.7K
Long-term potentiation, or LTP, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTP is the process of synaptic strengthening that occurs over time between pre- and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic strengthening of LTP works in opposition to the synaptic weakening of long-term depression (LTD) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Social Facilitation01:04

Social Facilitation

34.4K
Not all intergroup interactions lead to negative outcomes. Sometimes, being in a group situation can improve performance. Social facilitation occurs when an individual performs better when an audience is watching than when the individual performs the behavior alone. This typically occurs when people are performing a task for which they are skilled.

Exercise and Muscle Performance01:27

Exercise and Muscle Performance

2.0K
Exercise induces a range of adaptations in muscle tissue, depending on the type and duration of activity. Such physical training can be broadly categorized into two types: endurance exercises and resistance exercises.
Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...

Summary

Experienced swimming coaches demonstrate better knowledge of the long-term athletic development (LTAD) model. However, coach experience does not impact acceptance or perceived usefulness of the LTAD model in daily practice.

Area of Science:

  • Sports Science
  • Coaching Education
  • Athletic Development

Background:

  • The Portuguese Swimming Federation introduced a long-term athletic development (LTAD) model in 2016.
  • Understanding coach perceptions is crucial for effective model implementation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the association between coaches' experience levels and their perceptions of the LTAD model's implementation.
  • To assess awareness, acceptance, and perceived usefulness of the LTAD model among coaches of varying experience.

Main Methods:

  • Survey administered to 86 swimming coaches categorized by experience: novice, intermediate, and experienced.
  • Questionnaire items focused on awareness, acceptance, usefulness, and peer implementation of the LTAD model.

Main Results:

  • Approximately 67% of coaches were aware of the LTAD model, with high acceptance (~95%) and perceived usefulness (~83%).
  • Experienced coaches showed significantly better knowledge of the model's existence compared to novice and intermediate coaches.
  • A majority (92%) expressed concern over peers not adhering to the model, citing the pursuit of immediate success as a primary reason.

Conclusions:

  • Coach experience correlates with knowledge of the LTAD model's existence.
  • Despite experience differences in awareness, acceptance and perceived usefulness of the LTAD model remain consistent across coaching levels.
  • Peer adherence to LTAD principles is a concern, driven by a focus on short-term results.
