Many patients prescribed nicotine patches in the emergency department (ED) do not fill their prescriptions. Enhancing prescription fulfillment rates for nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is crucial for smoking cessation success.

  • To identify factors associated with NRT-P prescription fulfillment.

  • Retrospective review of 500 patients prescribed NRT-P from January 2018 to October 2019.
  • Data collected included demographics, chronic conditions, and insurance status.
  • Prescription fulfillment was assessed using the Surescripts system.

Main Results:

  • Only 44% of patients filled their NRT-P prescriptions.
  • Female patients and those with chronic lung disease were more likely to fill prescriptions.
  • Self-pay patients had the lowest fill rates; 13% achieved smoking cessation.

Conclusions:

  • A significant number of patients do not fill NRT-P prescriptions obtained in the ED.
  • Strategies to improve NRT-P fulfillment rates require further investigation.
  • Improving access and adherence to NRT-P is essential for effective smoking cessation programs.
