Endoscopic Studies II: Thoracocentesis

740
Thoracentesis(Thoracocentesis), commonly known as pleural tap, is a medical procedure where a 22 gauge needle is inserted into the pleural space, the area between the lung and chest wall. This procedure is commonly performed to diagnose or treat various respiratory disorders.
Description
Excess pleural fluid or air may accumulate in some respiratory disorders in the thoracic cavity. To treat pleural effusion, a physician conducts thoracentesis by carefully piercing the chest wall and entering...

Endoscopic Studies I: Bronchoscopy and Thoracoscopy

317
Endoscopy is a non-surgical medical technique used to examine a person's internal organs and vessels. This lesson will focus on two types of endoscopic studies: bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy.
Bronchoscopy
Description
Bronchoscopy is a procedure that involves direct visualization of the larynx, trachea, and bronchi for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. A flexible fiber optic or rigid bronchoscope is used to carry out the procedure. The fiber-optic bronchoscope is more frequently used due...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Surgical Training
  • Residency Admissions

Background:

  • Integrated thoracic surgery residency programs (IP) utilize away rotations for applicants to differentiate themselves.
  • Perceptions of the value, cost, and expectations of these away rotations are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the perceptions of value, cost, and expectations of away rotations among Integrated Thoracic Surgery (IP) applicants and program directors.

Main Methods:

  • Anonymous electronic surveys were distributed to IP applicants and program directors in March-April 2020.
  • Surveys assessed cost, frequency, goals, objectives, and perceived value of away rotations.

Main Results:

  • 94% of surveyed applicants completed an away rotation, with 57% spending an average of $5000.
  • Applicants found away rotations valuable for assessing program location, education, operative experience, student treatment, and collegiality.
  • Both applicants and program directors recognized impression management and program fit as key values, though directors prioritized overall applicant strength.

Conclusions:

  • Away rotations facilitate positive impressions and program compatibility.
  • Future research should investigate the impact of eliminating away rotations on the Integrated Thoracic Surgery Match, especially considering pandemic-related application changes.
