The linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex (LUBAC) forms unique ubiquitin chains with linear linkages and oxyester branches, dependent on HOIL-1L activity. This discovery reveals a new mechanism for LUBAC in assembling heterotypic ubiquitin chains.
